Autoclaves are indispensable equipment in laboratories, food processing and other fields. As one of their core components, sealing rings directly affect the sterilization effect and the operational safety of the equipment. However, the aging or damage of sealing rings is often overlooked, leading to sterilization failure and even equipment malfunctions.
I. The function and importance of sealing rings
The sealing ring serves as the “gatekeeper” of an autoclave, responsible for maintaining the equipment’s airtightness in high-temperature and high-pressure environments. Once the sealing ring malfunctions, it may cause steam leakage, insufficient pressure, or even sterilization failure, thereby affecting experimental results or product quality.
II. 5 Major signs indicating the need for sealing ring replacement
1.Cracks or deformation on the sealing ring surface: When exposed to high-temperature and high-pressure environments for a long time, the sealing ring is prone to aging, leading to cracks or deformation.
2.Unstable equipment pressure: If the pressure gauge fluctuates significantly during the sterilization process, it may indicate a decline in the sealing performance of the sealing ring.
3.Steam leakage: Hearing a “hissing” sound or observing steam leakage during operation indicates that the sealing ring has failed.
4.Deterioration of sterilization effect: Even if the program runs normally, if the sterilization result fails to meet the standard, it may be due to a problem with the sealing ring.
5.Excessive service life: The general service life of a sealing ring is 1-2 years. Even if there is no obvious damage beyond the period, it is recommended to replace it.
III. How to extend the service life of sealing rings?
1.Clean the sealing ring regularly: Avoid dirt accumulation and keep the surface of the sealing ring clean.
2.Avoid friction: For hand – operated autoclaves, always unscrew the cover completely to the top when opening it, ensuring that the sealing ring is fully separated from the operating table to prevent wear caused by friction.
3.Avoid overloading operation: Operate strictly in accordance with the equipment manual and prevent the equipment from being in an overloaded state for a long time.
IV. Precautions for replacing sealing rings

  1. Select the appropriate sealing ring: Choose the original factory sealing ring to ensure that the size and material match.
  2. Pay attention to aligning the position during installation: Avoid twisting or squeezing to ensure the sealing ring is correctly installed.
  3. Test the equipment’s sealing performance after replacement: Ensure the equipment operates normally without any leakage.
Although the sealing ring is small, it is crucial to the sterilization effect and equipment safety. Only through regular inspection and timely replacement can the autoclave always maintain the best condition.
